The Mavericks have a new head coach with Union Co. ties in David Johnson. Johnson replaces Aubry Carter after 11 seasons at Marvin Ridge. While Johnson was at Cuthbertson (2013-2018) he led the Cavs to 36-37 record and the best season in school history with a 11-4 record and into the Final-4 in 2014. The Mavs will have their QB in junior Levi Kerr. Kerr played in 7 games and played well throwing for 1084 yards on 57% completion percentage with 7 TDs. The offensive backfield returns their leading rusher in senior Jake Robbins. Robbins ran for 539 yards & 7 TDs on 105 carries. The Mavericks lose their top 2 receivers from 2025 in Alex Voss (563 yds) and Levi Haines (693 yds). WR Cooper Meek had 218 yards receiving 18 catches in limited action in 2025.
The Mavericks defense graduates a lot from a defense that gave up 23.6 points per game in 2025 but return 5 of their top 10 tacklers heading into 2026. The Mavs defense will be led by senior “headhunter” Evan Culicerto, who will anchor the Maverick linebackers. Culicerto led all of Union Co. with 141 tackles in 2025 including 7 games with 10+ tackles. Culicerto has been named a 2026 UCHSF Defensive POY candidate as we get the season started. Chase Wakefield had 41 stops in 2025 is returning along with Patrick Cunningham. Jake Robbins had 3 sacks as a junior and is the top returning sacker from 2025. The Mavs defensive backfield will be led by senior Zach Schumacher, who had 3 interceptions and added 56 stops in 2025. Senior Michael Rodriquez played in 8 games and had 11 stops and an INT in 2025. Senior Anthony Fuller had 21 stops and 2 INTs (both vs. Cuthbertson) in 2025 is returning to the Mavs defensive backfield as well. Senior kicker Ford Fehling committed Tennessee after a strong junior year where he was named ALL-UCHSF 1st Team, All-SCC & SCC SPECIAL TEAMS POY, connected on 26-of-26 PATs for the Mavericks. Was good on 10-of-14 on field goals. Tallied 56 points for the Mavs and averaged 67.4 yards per kick-off with 33 touchbacks. Marvin Ridge opens the 2026 season at Cox Mill on Aug 21st.
